Rightsizing for Retirees

Location: Awbrey Butte in Bend, Oregon

You are probably familiar with the terms “starter home” and “dream home.” The first is typically a small, affordable home you start with before you grow into a larger home and then, downsizing later again in retirement years. Rightsizing does not define increasing or decreasing the size of your home. Rather, you are adjusting your home size and features to better fit your needs. As the name implies, rightsizing is all about finding a home that makes sense for you and your family and your lifestyle at that point in time. These homeowners bought a partially wooded lot in the Awbrey Butte neighborhood that has cascade mountain views. They wanted a rightsized but also sustainable home and chose Solaire Homebuilders to build their custom home after talking to a few other local home builders in the Bend, Oregon area.

These homeowners wanted their home on the Butte to be a light and bright Modern Farmhouse with a vaulted great room and a covered deck for outdoor living and entertaining space. We designed their home to take advantage of the lot conditions, positioned it for full future solar and kept their views of the Cascade Mountains. The classic white and black exterior color scheme is complimented by the traditional farmhouse architectural staples including board-n-batten siding, metal roof accents as well as multiple roof peaks and a front porch with exposed wooden beams. The contemporary ranch shape of this home is primarily on one-level with stairs down to a less frequently used walk-out, daylight basement with guest suites for their adult children and extra storage.

The interior employs updated versions of classic farmhouse materials to get a fresh but timeless take on the style with a Scandinavian modern twist. When you first enter the home, the modern A-frame character of the vaulted ceiling with custom wooden beams in the family room delivers drama and elegance. This framing detail and shape is continued from the front of the house over the front door through the family room to the rear covered deck. This beautiful space can be viewed and enjoyed from the foyer, home office, as well as the kitchen and eat-in dining area. Along the family room wall there are oversized glass doors leading to the dramatic, vaulted, covered deck with architectural beams.

The interior of the home features a neutral color palette, mixed materials and simple silhouettes. Clean lines and high-quality finishes are something we pride ourselves on for our custom-built homes. And while this design style may celebrate a streamlined and contemporary aesthetic, it is anything but boring. In fact, it is the perfect backdrop for the homeowner’s art collection. The bright and cheery classical white gourmet kitchen features an oversized island and creates a gathering space that everyone loves. The wheel shaped, forged iron chandelier with faux candles adds a cozy evening glow to the vaulted ceilings in the kitchen’s dine-in eating area. The streamlined modern fireplace becomes a focal point of the open concept family room and has a natural beam mantle that connects visually to the ceiling beam accent. The primary bedroom suite is on the main level and features a luxurious spa-like bathroom with heated floors, towel warmer, walk-in shower, freestanding soaking tub and expansive walk-in closet. The whimsical and modern bathroom mirrors reflect the homeowner’s artistic personal style.

Because the homeowners are semi-retired, we designed flexible, multi-use spaces that fit their current lifestyle but can be used in other ways in the future. This included spaces for a small home office and a bright and cheery art studio that could be a music room, library or yoga studio someday. A woodshop workspace and Central Oregon outdoor “toy” storage (bikes, kayaks, skis, etc.) in their over-sized garage. Full solar on the roof makes this home a Net Zero energy home for our homeowners with minimal energy bills.

For many of our clients, rightsizing comes at the same stage in life as downsizing in their retirement years. Individuals reach a point in later life when they no longer need as much room as they did for instance, to raise a family or work from home. Rightsizing for retirees into a Solaire-built, sustainable custom home can have many benefits, including lower payments, less maintenance expenses, and providing a home that fits their current lifestyle with accessibility plans as they age in place. Rightsizing isn’t just about the need for less space. It can also be about a home that requires less attention and costs less to operate.
